After an orthodontic treatment, teeth will always have a natural tendency to shift over time.
To prevent this, we usually place a retention wire behind the front teeth — if possible, both upper and lower. This is typically supplemented with a nighttime retainer, which keeps all the teeth aligned and also acts as a backup in case the wire comes loose.
The retention devices are always individually tailored to the needs of each patient.
After placement, we schedule retention check-ups, during which we monitor the wires and also keep an eye on the wisdom teeth, if they are (still) present.
To maintain the results of your orthodontic treatment for life, it is essential that the retention devices are also properly maintained and worn regularly over a lifetime.
Repairs or replacement of retention wires are normal and depend on individual wear and tear.
